What is Cervical and Lumbar Spine Surgery?

The cervical and lumbar spinal regions are located up around the neck and in the lower back respectively, and many back issues originate in one of these two areas. Cervical spine surgery is therefore meant to correct issues in the neck and upper back while lumbar spine surgery should fix any lower back problems you might have.

In many cases, these surgeries require the removal or insertion of bone or soft tissue material to improve motion in the cervical and lumbar areas, though there are many different kinds of cervical and lumbar spine surgeries that you will need to first discuss with your doctor.

What are the Benefits of Cervical and Lumbar Spine Surgery?
The goal of these surgeries is to relieve pain and other symptoms you might be experiencing by easing pressure on or decompressing the nerves in your neck or lower back. You should also expect to see improved spinal alignment, increased range of motion in the neck or lower back, and a more stable spinal column.
What is the Expected Recovery Time?
Recovery time will always depend on the specific cervical and lumbar spine surgery you underwent and how well your body can adapt. Some patients are out of the hospital in one to two days; others can take over a week. Additional physical therapy will typically last four to six weeks after surgery, and you can expect to be back at 100% in about three to four months.
What are the Possible Risks?
All surgeries include some potential for complications, and many of the common surgical risks apply here, including bleeding and blood clots, nerve or spinal cord injury or infection. Due to the nature of many of these kinds of surgeries, you could also run the risk of lung and heart problems or continued pain at the surgical site
